Navigating Typos in Your Social Media Post (aka masterpiece)

You've crafted an incredible post, it's live, garnering likes, shares, and comments, signaling a successful reach—then, you spot a typo in your video or image. Panic sets in momentarily. What do you do next?

No sweat, we have you covered!

Strategies to Avoid Typos:

Before diving into how to correct typos, it's crucial to adopt strategies to prevent them. Espically as you may be aware that most design software doesn't have a spelling or grammatical call out/fixing feature. While the approaches below are not completely foolproof, there are effective methods to minimize their occurrence.

  • Utilize Document Editors: Before posting, draft your captions and descriptions in Google Docs or Microsoft Word to leverage their robust spell-check features.

  • Incorporate Grammar Checkers: Tools like Grammarly can be a lifesaver, integrating with platforms like Canva to catch errors, albeit occasionally missing some.

  • Multiple Reviews: Always proofread your content multiple times, and if possible, get another set of eyes on it before going live.

Typos Happen—Here’s How to Handle Them:

Even with the best preparations, typos can slip through. If it's just text in a post/caption area, most platforms allow edits. For example, LinkedIn lets you edit posts but will indicate to viewers that the post has been edited—a minor caveat but something to keep in mind.

Fixing Typos in Videos and Images:

  • On Facebook: You can replace images with typos on Facebook. This is the only platform that currently lets you do it (and we appreciate that!). Just go to the post, click the "..." at the top of the post, select "edit photos," and then upload the correct image while removing the erroneous one. These steps to fix a typo, however, only work for images, not videos.

  • Other Platforms: We hate to be the bearer of bad news, but this next option is based more on decisions vs. happy endings. If the typo is in a video or image on platforms other than Facebook, you might choose to leave it if it's minor (sometimes, viewers don't notice), or you may need to delete the post altogether. Sometimes a good ol' typo can slip and no one will ever catch it (or at least mention it to you). Depending how obvious it is in the post, you may want to keep it vs. letting the post go.

  • For Instagram: Instead of deleting, consider archiving the post. Archiving hides the post from your feed and the public but retains all the interactions and data, which can be useful.
